Once the Windows 7 fix was selected it all ran beautifully and I was able to update my version 4.03 hand control to NXS 4.22. When asked, I had to choose COM 3 for my Plugable adapter to find the scope. I also had to do the same with the HCupdate program that the installer downloaded. I would have never have discovered this “hack” if not for the notes on Mike Swanson’s NextStar Resource Site. In order to get HCupdateInstall to open I had to use the Troubleshooting tools in Windows to indicate that HCupdateInstall was last updated for Windows 7. I connected my Plugable Tech USB-to-Serial adapter between the laptop and hand control and it was immediately recognized by Windows. Since I had access to both my OS X desktop AND the Windows 10 desktop I was able to click and drag the HCupdateInstall.exe file that I had previously downloaded to my Mac desktop into the Windows window. And, frankly, it was much easier than using Boot Camp. Using Fusion and the Windows10 ISO I had downloaded for Boot Camp use, I was able to get Windows 10 to open as a virtual machine on my OS X Catalina desktop, without rebooting as is required by Boot Camp. I downloaded the Fusion 12 dmg (612MB) then created an account, registered and they sent me a link to a free key for personal use. I was disheartened but began looking at options and discovered that VMware had also recently made Fusion available free to Mac users.

With Windows 10 now available free to Mac users wishing to use Boot Camp, I decided to try that route but was stymied when I found out that the SSD upgrade I had performed on my laptop was not compatible with Boot Camp. I decided to look for a way to update the hand control software using Windows on my Mac since the current Java based Celestron updater will not work on older version 4 hand controls. Unfortunately the newer NexStar Plus hand control is incompatible with older CPCSeries scopes so I could not simply buy a new hand control. I was very disappointed to find that the GPS clock reset that happened in 2019 made the version 4.03 hand control software very difficult if not impossible to use. Meanwhile my job required more and more of my time and I used the scope less and less.Īfter mothballing the scope for a decade due to career needs, I recently retired and decided to restart my astronomy hobby. I did not have access to a PC then and since the ‘scope worked perfectly it was not a concern. I had been unable to update software on my CPC Series ‘scope since purchase (circa 2005) due to the incompatibility of Celestron software installers with my MacBook Pro laptop. Using (free) VMWare Fusion 12 and (free) Windows 10 on OS X Catalina (10.5). Topic: Updating Celestron version 4 hand control with a Mac
